ABOUT PACO ALFONSIN

Theatre practitioner for almost 30 years; Performing, directing, researching, coaching and teaching. From Jerez-Andalucía, based nowadays in Cluj-Napoca (Transylvania) and also in his home-land in South of Spain. Founder of Grupo LIM&TE in Andalucía (International Laboratory of Movement & Theatre); Co-founder of Spiri2Art Centre and TransylvaniaTheatreLab in Transylvania.

His more than 30 years “sur les planches” / “sobre las tablas” /  “on stage”… have taken him through a vast diversity of “theatre languages”: from the fragmented and dogmatic “Physical Theatre” of the 90s, to the diverse, playful and presentational-honest British Theatre (“I am here; I am beautiful; I am here to tell you a story”); From the truthful “Theatre of the De-formed” to the risky and philosophical  Contemporary French Theatre; From the precise and eclectic Eastern European Theatre to the burlesque of the French Cabaret; From the edgy “Cités de Marseille” making contemporary opera with kids, to the deep and human Community Theatre in Scotland and North of England. He also had the opportunity to nurture his artistic practice, encountering in his journey masters and directors like Yves Marc (Theatre de Mouvement. France), Gabor Tompa (Hungarian State Theatre Cluj. Transylvania), Alan Lyddiard (The Performance Ensemble, Leeds. UK), Emma Rice (Wise Children. Bristol. UK), Juan Dolores Caballero (Teatro Del Velador. Seville. Spain), Richard Gregory (Quarantine Theatre. Manchester. UK), Eugenio Barba (ODIN Theatre / ISTA. Denmark), Serge Noyels (Theatre des Calanques. Marseille. France), Esperanza Abad (Madrid), , Dominique Serrand (The Moving Company, Minneapolis. USA), Ricardo Iniesta (Atalaya-TNT. Seville, Spain)… amongst others.

This rich environment allowed and provoked him to direct and run Artistic-theatre experiences like: “Sept2&AFew”, a month long international residence and meeting in Jerez; “Y tú?… De Quién Eres?”, Music-Theater Laboratory also in Jerez, his home town, in collaboration with artists from France, UK, Zanzibar and Spain; “A Casa” at Nottara Theater (Bucharest. Roumania); “Story of a DoubleBass” at Hungarian State Theatre Cluj (Transylvania. Roumania); “Y, Ahora Qué?” (From Quai Ouest. Koltes) as movement teacher at Seville, ESAD. (Andalucia. Spain); “Al Comás del Viento” (Cía. Mª José Franco- Flamenco-Jerez)

His presence in the screen (TV and Film) has been part of festivals in Vancouver, Tokio, Palm Springs, Seville, Manila, London, Cannes amongst others. He has appeared in TV series as Hispania (Spain) and Plus Belle la Vi (France)

Nowadays, Yves Marc (Cie. Yves Marc-Theatre du Mouvement), as master and close collaborator on movement practice and Edo Gergely and her approach on Phenomenological Psychology are nurturing his path (his TAO).

“Paco Alfonsin builds a lively show, full of humor and sophistication, color and sound, playfulness and elegiac. Yes, life is a lie, but rather in the sense of delusion, a dream, the figment of imagination. At least in this respect.

Short Story of a Double Bass is a complex performance by way of its cultural references and the extremely contemporary interpretation of Chekhov’s classic story. A humorous show with a colorful and fantastic staging, accessible, with a subtle and refined message.”

Claudiu Groza: Life is a lie…, Tribuna, January 2018

“What was “a personal, passionate and political matter” now takes the form of a representation built on the classical theme of the journey. The double bass player Pitsikatov – portrayed by the remarkable performer Gábor Viola, has a white face make-up and is wearing a top hat, like a clown – travels in his quest to find the meaning of life. Let’s emphasize the impact of one of the most famous metaphors of universal literature, namely that life is a dream. Pitsikatov seems to meet the one who might be the woman for him, Bibulova. She is portrayed by actress Kinga Ötvös as a Wagnerian lyrical artist.”

Mircea Morariu: În ianuarie, prin Teatrele din ţară [January, in the Theatres of our country] , Adevărul, January 17, 2018
